WASHINGTON - Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for a corruption scandal that shook up Washington’s power elite and contributed to the Republican loss of control in Congress.

Judge Ellen Huvelle issued the sentence on conspiracy and other charges after federal prosecutors recommended leniency due to Abramoff’s cooperation in pursuing corruption cases against lawmakers and former administration officials. He faced a maximum of 11 years under a plea deal reached in 2006.

With Abramoff’s help, the Justice Department has won corruption convictions against a parade of lawmakers, Bush administration figures and Capitol Hill aides.

Abramoff admitted trading luxury golf junkets, expensive meals, skybox tickets and other gifts for political favors. The scandal shook Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to Capitol Hill.

Huvelle said the sentence would be served at the same time as Abramoff’s current prison time. He was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison in March 2006 on unrelated fraud charges in the purchase of a Florida casino cruise line. Abramoff began serving the term in a federal prison in Maryland in November 2006.

Abramoff apologized to the court and said he was a changed man.

“I come before you as a broken man,” Abramoff said. “I’m not the same man who happily and arrogantly engaged in a lifestyle of political and business corruption.”

Abramoff wrote earlier even he is shocked to look back on what his career had become. But he said he was “not a bad man” and earlier had pleaded for leniency.

“It is hard to see the exact moment that I went over the line but, looking backwards, it is amazing for me to see how far I strayed and how I did not see it at the time,” Abramoff wrote. “So much of what happens in Washington stretches the envelope, skirts the spirit of the rules, and lives in the loopholes. But even by those standards, I blundered farther than even those excesses would allow.”

Abramoff is already serving a nearly six-year prison sentence for a fraudulent Florida casino deal.

Abramoff said his cooperation has been extensive. Not only did he confirm what prosecutors knew, he said he also offered new leads and tips, pointed them in different directions and spent countless hours meeting with investigators. Several Capitol Hill aides and powerful political figures have pleaded guilty because of his cooperation.

He said he has spent the first two years in prison reflecting on his actions.

“I see that my crimes all had the same cause — my shortsighted and selfish view that the ends could justify the means,” he wrote earlier. “I am not a bad man (although to read all the news articles one would think I am Osama bin Laden), but I did many bad things.” (LMAO!)

The night before, two-dozen policemen searched the Hebraica community center in Caracas — a sprawling, country club-like complex — looking for weapons and for evidence of subversive activity.

Days later the Venezuelan zionist community’s umbrella organization, the Confederation of Israelite Associations of Venezuela, fired off a statement denouncing the raid as an “unjustifiable act.”

“This was government intimidation,” said Abraham Levy Benshimol, president of the Confederation of Israelite Associations of Venezuela.

“We’re facing the first anti-Jewish government in our history,” said Simon Sultan, president of the Hebraica community center in Caracas.

Jews started coming to Venezuela from North Africa and New Khazaria (Eastern Europe) in the mid-1800s, but most came during and after World War II. Evenly made up of Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews, they thrived in the oil-rich country. By 1998 when Chavez came to power, there were about 16,000 Jews in Venezuela. Since then, about 4,000 have departed to Florida.

Levy Benshimol, president of the Confederation of Israelite Associations of Venezuela, said Chavez met with CAIV leaders when Chavez first came to power in 1998, but began to move away when zionists (led by Rabbi Pinchas Brenner) supported the U.S.-led coup attempt against Chavez in April 2002. Government officials also knew that Jews and Israelis are active arms dealers.

In 2004 Venezuela’s government raided the Hebraica community center.

In 2006 when the Jews attacked Lebanon (again), Chavez condemned zionists, and recalled the charge d’affaires of the Venezuelan Embassy in Tel Aviv.

The zionist entity responded by calling its ambassador home. Although the Israeli diplomat returned to Caracas a month later, and Venezuela sent a low-level envoy to Tel Aviv, relations between Venezuela and the zionist entity remain strained.

Venezuela’s zionists appealed to Argentina’s government (controlled by Jews) to reign in Chavez.

Nestor Kirchner, the (Jewish) president of Argentina, asked Chavez to meet with the Confederation of Israelite Associations of Venezuela. Chavez did so in January 2007.

Benshimol and others say there has been no instance of physical violence against Jews in Venezuela. On the contrary, Venezuelan Jews have defended Chavez against accusations of anti-Semitism aired by hyper-militant groups as the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Lately, however, the atmosphere has worsened because of Chavez’s increasingly truthful words about the zionist entity. A television program called “The Razor,” broadcast on a state-owned channel, has featured lengthy discussions of Mossad agents that work against Venezuela’s government with the support of the United States and opposition forces in Venezuela. The host of the show questioned the loyalty of Venezuelan Jews, saying their first loyalty is always to the zionist entity.

Venezuela’s zionists have close ties with corrupt former defense minister Raúl Isaías Baduel, and they honored him after he left the government and became a fierce opponent of Chavez.

In March 2007, government officials stayed away from the 40th-anniversary celebration of the Confederation of Israelite Associations of Venezuela. Benshimol said that the Venezuela’s government has had no official ties with his organization for the past year.

As zionist atrocities continue to increase in Palestine, Venezuela’s government continues to move away from Jews. The number of children attending the school at the Hebraica center has dropped some 37% in the past decade, while membership at the club has slipped 30%.

Most of the departed have moved to South Florida, Spain and the zionist entity — although some continue to commute to Venezuela to tend their sizeable businesses.

Jews don’t contribute to Jewish organizations in Venezuela once they leave. Therefore the zionist community is beginning to have financial problems.

The 2004 raid on the Confederation of Israelite Associations of Venezuela was led by the equivalent of the FBI. The 1 Dec 2007 raid was done by officers from a police force under the control of the Interior Ministry. There is no evidence that Chavez ordered the latest raid, but the all-powerful Interior Ministry is one of his strongest levers.

Simon Sultan, president of the Hebraica community center in Caracas says that Tarek al Assaimi (whose father was the representative of Saddam Hussein’s Baath party in Venezuela) is the deputy Interior and Justice minister in charge of internal security. Simon Sultan accused Tarek al Assaimi of ordering the December 1st raid.

Asked about the possibility that most Venezuelan Jews might eventually migrate to Florida for good, Benshimol paused. “We want to live here, but we want to live in dignified conditions.”

When Walkersville blocked a Muslim sect’s plans to build a worship center in town, the rejection only added insult to injury for a community that has faced hostility and violence throughout the world.

The messianic faith is a pariah among mainstream Muslims. Some members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community who now live in the Washington area had been threatened, jailed and forced to flee their home countries. Even here in the United States, they say, other Muslims can be antagonistic.

That made the pain of the rejection by Walkersville, a small town in Frederick County, only keener.

“We did not expect that,” said Ahsanullah Zafar, the ameer — or president — of the Ahmadiyya movement in the United States, which is based in Silver Spring.

But it is a faith that has survived for more than 100 years despite its controversial beliefs and the persecution it has endured. It claims 70 million members worldwide. In the United States, it has about 40 mosques. Its Silver Spring mosque has about 3,000 members.

Qadiani’s beliefs touched on other faiths as well. He preached, for example, that he was the messiah of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and other religions. Jesus, he believed, did not die on the cross, but survived and escaped to India, where he died at the age of 120.

The hearing is on 3rd September is at the United States District Court (U.S.D.C.) for the Southern District of New York (S.D.N.Y), located at 500 Pearl Street, Manhattan. It will be held in the Magistrates Court, 5th floor.

The hearing will start at 10am.

Although it is called preliminary examination, Aafia will likely be indicted before then and arraigned on her indictment on that day. Currently, the hearing is scheduled for magistrate’s court on the 5th floor. Magistrate’s court is small, but they will likely move the hearing to a larger courtroom if a large number of people attend as they did at a previous hearing. If she is indicted, a judge will be assigned and it will likely be moved to that judge’s courtroom. The judge may also change the time (and date) of the hearing. Any further changes will be posted as soon as they are known but may be as late as the day before the hearing.

BACKGROUND

Dr Aafia Siddiqui, the American educated Pakistani scientist and mother of three was detained for years by the US in Bagram. She has been the victim of the US programme of secret detention for five years since having been kidnapped in Karachi by Pakistan security services in 2003 along with her three children.

On Monday 4th August 2008, federal prosecutors in the US confirmed that Aafia Siddiqui was extradited to the US from Afghanistan where they allege she had been detained since mid-July 2008. The US administration claims that she was arrested by Afghani forces outside Ghazni governor’s compound with manuals on explosives and ‘dangerous substances in sealed jars’ on her person. They further allege that whilst in custody she shot at US officers and was injured in the process.

According to her lawyer, Elaine Whitfield Sharp, “We do know she was at Bagram for a long time. It was a long time. According to my client she was there for years and she was held in American custody; her treatment was horrendous.”

Aafia’s claim is contrary to the heavily contested position of the US administration that she was detained in July by Afghan forces while attempting to bomb the compound of the governor of Ghazni. The US has previously denied the presence of female detainees in Bagram and that Aafia was ever held there, bar for medical treatment in July 2008.

Aafia Siddiqui now faces trial in the US in circumstances that can only be described as strange at best. Questions remain as to her own whereabouts over the last five years and still that of her children.

Her medical condition is currently extremely poor as she suffers from gun shot wounds, and part of her intestine has been removed. Her condition is not made any easier by the flights of stairs she is forced to climb by herself in her condition during visits and the strip and cavity searches that she is forced to endure.
